UPDATE 01/19/10: News from our partners in the field are posted here.
Yesterday, a major earthquake struck Haiti. Buildings crumbled, hospitals collapsed, and even the Presidential palace fell. Today, countless people dig through rubble with their bare hands, looking for any trace of loved ones.
In response to this tragedy, MAZON hit the ground running. We have a long-standing dedication to health services & sustainable development in Haiti, and one of our long-time partners, the International Medical Corps., reports our immediate impact:
International Medical Corps is assembling a team of first responders and resources to provide lifesaving medical care and other emergency services to survivors of the earthquake. This response draws on 25 years of experience in emergency settings, including last September’s earthquake in Sumatra, Indonesia, and the massive 2005 earthquake in Pakistan.
“When we arrive in Haiti, we will conduct a rapid needs assessment to determine what the greatest needs are and if we need additional assistance and expertise on the ground,” reports Dina Prior, Team Leader for the response. “Emergency health care will be our primary focus.”
Today, MAZON launched an Emergency Haiti Fund, to continue to provide lifesaving medical care and emergency food relief. When you donate using the URL http://mazon.org/go/helphaiti, your funds will be set aside for the Emergency Fund. The response has already been staggering, for which we are grateful.
But there is still much more to do. Another of our longtime partners in the region, The Lambi Fund of Haiti, reports that many of their agricultural developments have been destroyed by the quake and aftershocks. Looking ahead, we pledge to rebuild sustainable farming and nutrition programs and keep Haitians healthy after emergency teams have left. This long-term focus has worked in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and it will work in Haiti.
We will continue to monitor events on the ground, and post updates as more information comes in. Thank you for helping MAZON remain committed to healing & feeding the Haitian people.
