The House of Representatives adjourned on September 30 without taking action on H.R. 5504 – the House version of the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act. Our Representatives had been presented with a Senate bill that cut food stamp benefits to pay for the remaining benefits in the legislation. Food stamps, now called SNAP, are a critical first-line defense against hunger and food insecurity. SNAP should not serve as a piggy bank to support other needs – now or ever.
We need you right now to be the voice of those people in our nation who are hungry. Your Representative is now in his/her home district. (You can locate the name and address by clicking here.) Try to arrange an in-person meeting, or at least make a phone call, or send an email or letter, to urge him/her to take action when they return from the recess to:
- Support passage of H.R. 5504 and
- Object to the use of SNAP benefits to support any legislation
Among the almost 41 million Americans who rely on food stamps, half are children and 1 in 10 recipients are over 60. This is your opportunity to make a difference. Please act now!
