Today President Obama signed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act into law. The new statute provides $4.5 billion over ten years to, among other benefits, support and improve access to school lunches and breakfasts.
While we greet the newly expanded benefits and increased access with enthusiasm, our work is not done. You joined MAZON in the so-far unsuccessful battle to pass the bill without using future SNAP cuts to fund it. We know that you agree that we cannot give up now.
The President and members of Congress, including Representative George Miller (Chair, Committee on Labor & Education), have promised to work hard to restore the SNAP cuts, but the fight belongs to each and every one of us. There are too many people who need our help and rely on our advocacy – we owe it to them to continue raising the issue with Congress and the Administration. We must make it clear that our concern is undiminished. We cannot allow people who need the safety net to bear the cost of providing healthy food for children.
Please contact your representative and the White House and let them know that you are counting on their promises to restore SNAP cuts. We thank you for all that you do for MAZON and, ultimately, the people we serve.
