In early April, MAZON learned of pending legislation in Texas that would expand access to summer food programs for low-income children (HB 643/SB 89). With less than two months left before the Legislature was set to adjourn, MAZON developed a “Sign and Send” postcard campaign to support the bill. MAZON Board members Shirley Davidoff and Ellen Marcus rallied the Jewish community in Dallas, engaging local synagogues and the JCRC to distribute over 1,250 postcards. On June 17, after making its way through both branches of the Legislature, Texas Governor Rick Perry signed HB 643/SB 89 into law.
Thanks to the remarkable efforts of this grassroots campaign, thousands more school children will not go without food during the summer months.
