We were mighty impressed with the teens we met at the NFTY (North American Federation of Temple Youth) Convention a few weeks ago. Our involvement at the convention was twofold: our Youth Outreach Coordinator Laura led an over-attended workshop called My Responsibility to the Hungry and also accepted a donation on behalf of MAZON with actor Joshua Malina.
During the workshop on Saturday, the teens had really meaningful, mature and informed discussions about their perceptions of hunger and the challenges people face in trying to access SNAP benefits. We were most impressed by their understanding of the paradoxical relationship between hunger and obesity. Each teen walked away with a concrete way to raise awareness in their community. We walked away amazed.
At the closing ceremony on Monday night, Laura addressed all 900 teens, to thank them for NFTY’s generous support over the past 26 years and to encourage them to consider new ways to strengthen the partnership. (We’ve already heard from some of them, who were inspired to get involved with MAZON!) Then actor Joshua Malina took the stage to encourage them to be confident in taking the first step towards engaging in Social Justice advocacy.
Thanks for having us NFTY! We can’t wait to see how this partnership grows!
