Rabbi Jonathan Stein

Jonathan Stein, Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation Shaaray Tefila of New York City, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business with a B.S. in Economics in 1969. He was ordained from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1975. He previously served as Senior Rabbi of Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation from 1978-1994 and as Senior Rabbi of Congregation Beth Israel of San Diego from 1994-2001.

Rabbi Stein is a Past President of the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) and a former editor of the CCAR Journal, having served in that capacity for six years. He taught Practical Rabbinics at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York, served as chair of the Commission on Jewish Education of Reform Judaism and as well as the CCAR ad-Hoc Committee on Human Sexuality.

In the general community, Rabbi Stein has been a Board member and officer of more than 40 organizations, including Chair of the Board of the United Way of San Diego, President of Operation Understanding, the Marion County Commission on Youth and the Indiana Inter-religious Commission on Human Equality. He was appointed a member of the City of San Diego Human Relations Commission. He has been recognized as an honorary member of the National Association of Temple Educators, as a life member of the North American Federation of Temple Youth, and has been honored by the World Union for Progressive Judaism.

Rabbi Stein has been married to Susan Pollock Stein, a teacher and Educational Therapist, for over 45 years. The Steins have two married daughters and four grandchildren.
