As part of its efforts to galvanize the Jewish community to speak out against proposed harsh cuts to SNAP in the 2018 Farm Bill, MAZON issued a sign-on letter to call on Members of Congress to act in the best interest of vulnerable Americans and reject the harmful proposals in the House Farm Bill.

The letter was signed by 678 rabbis and cantors, representing 41 states and the District of Columbia. Signatories represented multiple denominations, bringing together a unified Jewish voice in opposition to the changes to SNAP in the House Farm Bill. The letter states that the proposed cuts ignore the realities of poverty in America, and that the Farm Bill must protect against hunger by strengthening SNAP, the cornerstone of our nation’s nutrition safety net.

The letters were delivered to representatives and senators during 36 meetings in one day on Capitol Hill with legislators representing 17 states. During the meetings, rabbis, as well as members of MAZON’s Board of Directors, shared with legislators that SNAP is America’s most important anti-hunger program and lifts millions of people out of poverty, and that any efforts to decimate this program will dramatically increase hunger in America. The legislative meetings were part of MAZON’s inaugural Rabbinic Justice Mission, which convened rabbis across a range of denominations to join MAZON in anti-hunger advocacy.
