MAZON Responds to the U.S. Senate Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017

LOS ANGELES, CA (June 23, 2017)— Abby J. Leibman, president and CEO at MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger, today issued this statement in response to the Senate release of a discussion draft of its healthcare legislation:

“Struggling families will find themselves falling through the safety net if the irresponsible health care legislation proposed by the Senate is allowed to become law.  Limited financial resources already force these families to engage in a precarious balancing act, which forces them to routinely choose between life’s necessities. A choice between health care and food is no choice at all.

“Food is a fundamental need for everyone. Without it, children cannot learn, sick people cannot heal, and adults cannot be productive members of society. If we want our nation to prosper, we must do everything we can to ensure that everyone can put enough nutritious food on the table each day. By forcing low- and middle-income families to make impossible choices between medicine and food, this cruel legislation will not only devastate the health care options for them but it will also surely increase the prevalence of hunger in this country.

“There is a profound disconnect between the rhetoric espoused by Republican leadership in the U.S. Senate and the harmful actions they propose in their improperly named ‘Better Care Reconciliation Act’. This Act will do nothing to make better care available to struggling Americans and it will precipitate a crisis for them of profound proportions as they desperately try to stretch their limited resources to cover the most basic of human needs – food and health care.”
