MAZON Responds to the House Working Group’s Nutrition Bill Draft

Los Angeles, August 5, 2013—Abby J. Leibman, President & CEO at MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger, today issued this statement regarding draft legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives which proposes $40 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP):

“This proposal is appalling on multiple levels,” says Leibman. “Notable, of course, is its extreme callousness to the enduring need felt by so many of our fellow Americans. Then, there is its authors’ apparent disregard for the political will of their constituents, who overwhelmingly support the need to maintain and strengthen SNAP. But what might be most disturbing (and telling) is what it says about its authors’ intentions moving forward – that their ideology is more important than their responsibility as our nation’s leaders; that they are unwilling to compromise or negotiate; that they don’t care if nothing gets done (again) this session.

“Millions of Americans are precariously perched on the edge of hunger. MAZON cannot and will not stand by while these legislators give them a strong push from behind over that precipice while they shred our nation’s vital nutrition safety net. We will remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting full funding for SNAP. We will continue to rally our supporters and our network of synagogue leaders and grantee partners to stand up for struggling families in America.”
