MAZON Joins Jewish Groups for Day of Action in Response to Immoral Cuts to Basic Needs

July 17, 2025

MAZON has joined the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) and the Network of Jewish Human Service Agencies for a nationwide day of action in response to the immoral reconciliation budget passed by Congress earlier this month.

A Moral Response to an Immoral Budget: Jewish Day of Action will engage advocates across the country — just as congressional representatives and senators are back in their districts on recess — in a joint effort to condemn the reconciliation budget. The day of action will take place on August 5, 2025 online and in-person across the country.

The reconciliation budget cut funding for Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and other essential social safety net programs for millions of vulnerable Americans. It is expected to throw 17 million Americans off of their health care coverage, as well as take food assistance away from millions of families and children.

“In America, no person should worry about where their next meal will come from. These cuts to vital nutrition assistance programs are going to leave children, families, and our elderly with empty cupboards and empty stomachs,” said Mia Hubbard, executive vice president at MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger. “SNAP, Medicaid, and CHIP are not government handouts; they’re investments in our nation’s families to ensure that everyone has a chance at a healthy, successful life. At MAZON, we’re proud to be supporting this effort to call out Congress’ devastating budget and push for them to fix what they broke before more Americans starve.”

While members of Congress are home for August recess, we’ll show up strong as a Jewish community to thank those who stood with us during the recent budget fight, express our deep disappointment to those who didn’t, and urge all lawmakers to show us they care about women, children, and families by using the funding process when they get back to Washington to make serious investments in our communities. As the budget law is enacted, we will not stand by while millions of people go hungry or without health care.

“Congress’ reconciliation budget represents a fundamental betrayal of both our American and Jewish values. Choosing to take food from children and strip health care from those in need is a shameful abandonment of our shared responsibility to protect those who are struggling,” said Sheila Katz, chief executive officer at NCJW. “National Council of Jewish Women is proud to launch this Jewish Day of Action alongside MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger and the Network of Jewish Human Service Agencies to demand better. Together, in a unified voice across the country, we will advocate for our elected officials to return from recess and restore the critical funding that reflects our values of dignity, equity, and care.”

“The impact of these cuts is going to be felt immediately by families in every town, city, and state in the nation,” said Reuben D. Rotman, president and chief executive officer at The Network. “People will lose health insurance, children will go hungry, and families will face impossible choices between rent, food, and medicine. Clinics and hospitals are already announcing they are being shuttered in response to these Medicaid cuts. Our Jewish values compel us to take action to defend these vital programs and the people they support.”

Historic Cuts to SNAP Deepen the War on Women (Ms. Magazine)

The last few months in Washington, D.C., have been consumed with political theatrics around the budget reconciliation process. Republicans in the House and Senate scrambled to pass legislation that will cut $184 billion from SNAP through 2034—by far the largest cut to SNAP in the program’s history—to finance tax cuts for the wealthy big businesses. They also hope to increase funding for pursuit of immigrants.  Read more.

House Ag Dems: OBBBA will allow states to end SNAP (The Fence Post)

States will be allowed to opt out of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program if state officials decide they cannot or will not pay the increased cost share under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), Democratic members of the House Agriculture Nutrition and Foreign Agriculture Subcommittee repeatedly pointed out at a hearing today. The three witnesses all agreed. Read more.

TC Jewfolk is proud to partner with MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger – a national organization inspired by Jewish values – to fight to end hunger among people of all faiths and backgrounds in the United States and Israel.

“We need committed advocates who do the work to move legislation aimed at ending hunger forward, as well as to fight harmful policies that would erode the safety net that enables so many people to put food on the table,” Haviv explained. “That work must happen at every level, and we are committed to a strong effort in statehouses nationwide.” Read more.
