Highly Partisan Farm Bill Fails to Address Hunger Following Historic SNAP Cuts

February 13, 2026

In response to today’s introduction of the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026, known colloquially as the “Farm Bill,” national anti-hunger advocates at MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger released the following statement criticizing the proposal as overly partisan and wholly insufficient. The organization called on House Agriculture Chair Glenn Thompson (R-PA-5th) to return to the bargaining table with members of both parties to produce a bill that reverses the recent damage done to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that supports food insecure families in need.

MAZON President & CEO Abby J. Leibman stated:

“It wasn’t long ago that we could expect to see actual bipartisan work in Congress. The Farm Bill used to offer an opportunity for elected officials from all walks of life to build consensus around policies that touched our farmers, food, and families. Now, after the Trump administration used their political trifecta to gut nutrition programs in their budget and tax bill, the bipartisan trust of this committee has been broken and this important reauthorization has been reduced to another partisan mess. This is not a viable or reasonable legislative response to the sabotaging of our federal anti-hunger programs, and Chairman Thompson knows it.

“This bill does very little to address the widespread fear and immense challenges of the over 47 million people struggling with hunger in every state and congressional district. Rather, it convolutes the purpose of SNAP in favor of policing how SNAP recipients feed themselves and their families. While ignoring the reality of low-income families, House Republicans are once again weakening SNAP — our country’s most effective way to fight hunger — at a time when Americans need it more than ever.

Republicans in Congress must come to their senses, return to the table, and work in a bipartisan fashion towards policies that help their constituents rather than trying to advance the Trump administration’s reckless, divisive, and draconian agenda.”

They also hope to increase funding for pursuit of immigrants.  Read more.

House Ag Dems: OBBBA will allow states to end SNAP (The Fence Post)

States will be allowed to opt out of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program if state officials decide they cannot or will not pay the increased cost share under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), Democratic members of the House Agriculture Nutrition and Foreign Agriculture Subcommittee repeatedly pointed out at a hearing today. The three witnesses all agreed. Read more.
