Hunger Can’t Wait: USDA Needs to Take Action

Even in a government shutdown, the Trump administration can and must keep SNAP benefits flowing.

SNAP helps families put food on the table, sustains local businesses, helps frontline workers, supports nutrition and wellness, and upholds the values that make America strong, reflects our duty to care for our neighbors in need.

Our leaders must take immediate action to prevent this crisis from getting even worse on November 1st.

More than 40 million Americans could wake up on November 1 with no way to buy food. Parents, children, veterans, and seniors could face a hunger crisis. All because of the reckless government shutdown. SNAP benefits for November are in danger of not being issued.

Here’s the thing: the money to prevent this exists. The USDA has contingency funds set aside for exactly this kind of emergency. But so far, the administration has refused to use them.

We’re calling on our leaders to use every tool they have to protect families from hunger and keep benefits flowing.

Why This Matters

SNAP is one of the most effective anti-hunger programs in America. It helps people afford groceries, puts healthy food within reach, and strengthens local economies.

The USDA has the legal authority and the funds to make sure those benefits continue. The contingency fund was created for moments like this, to prevent hunger when politics get in the way.

But right now, they’re refusing to use it. That decision would mean empty refrigerators and longer lines at food banks already stretched to the breaking point. It would mean children going to bed hungry because leaders failed to act.

This isn’t a question of resources. It’s a question of will.

Here’s What We Are Asking

We need the USDA to use contingency funds immediately to ensure November SNAP benefits are delivered. And we need Congress to demand that USDA follow the law and act before it’s too late.

This is about people, not politics. It’s about making sure families can buy food next week.

Hunger Is a Policy Choice

The administration has the tools to prevent this crisis. What’s missing is the will.

Hunger is not inevitable. It’s a choice, and together, we can choose action.
