Advocates Slam Senate GOP After Months of Delays and Still No Relief for Hungry Americans

September 16, 2026 — Months after Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman John Boozman (R-AR) proposed the “Agriculture Act of 2026,” also known as the Farm Bill, and despite its failure to address in any meaningful way the growing nationwide SNAP crisis, Republicans today advanced the legislation out of Committee on a straight party-line vote. Anti-hunger advocates at MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger slammed the proposal as again lacking any real support for hungry Americans being forced off food assistance, and demanded the full Senate reject the legislation.

MAZON President & CEO Abby J. Leibman stated:

“It has been nearly three months since Chairman Boozman introduced his so-called ‘Farm Bill,’ and more than a month since he and his fellow Republicans on the Senate Agriculture Committee failed to pass the proposal. Unfortunately, it would seem that in this case, time does not grant wisdom. Rather than taking that time to negotiate a real solution to the crisis that has already pushed over 5 million people off of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in the last year, Boozman and his Republican colleagues have instead chosen to plow forward with the same flawed bill as before.

“We are in a crisis of Republicans’ own making. Just as we warned a year ago, state legislatures across the country are struggling and failing to make the new math work as they are forced to shoulder costs they never should have been saddled with. By design, the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act’ continues to wreak havoc on nearly every level of government while making life harder for low-income families. But yet again, when given the opportunity to even start to set things right, Senate Republicans turned away.

“So we state it again, as clearly as possible: Congress must reject this weak and ineffective proposal until it is replaced with a real fix for hungry families, starting with a clean, minimum two-year delay in SNAP benefit cost shifts to all states. Americans are desperate for help. It’s time Congress actually listened.”
