As the results of the 2026 midterm elections become clear, and with a definitive Democratic majority in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, anti-hunger advocacy leaders at MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger applauded voters for their strong outpouring of support for a future where food insecurity is a thing of the past. The organization called on Congress to take urgent action to protect anti-hunger programs before the end of the 119th Congress, particularly regarding the future of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
MAZON President & CEO Abby J. Leibman stated:
“Due to the hateful policies of the outgoing Republican Congress, at least 5.5 million people have been kicked off of SNAP in the past year. States are buckling under the weight of these reckless policies. Millions of children have been pushed into food insecurity. House and Senate Republicans chose to impose disastrous policies, and now the American people are making it clear that these actions were unacceptable.
“Throughout this midterm election cycle, affordability has been the key for many voters, especially regarding their grocery bills. But even with the impending change in the composition of Congress, we will still be facing a divided government with an executive branch dangerously committed to cutting basic needs programs to the bone. The Trump administration would do well to take note of the people’s voices and votes before they attempt any further harm.
“In the next few weeks, current Members of Congress will have one last chance to take action on behalf of their constituents, rather than against them. They can and must alleviate the SNAP crisis of their own making by implementing – at minimum – a two-year delay of the harmful SNAP benefit cost shift before the end of this year without harmful offsets. This would ease the unrealistic timeline and burden that they placed on the states. This ‘lame duck’ period is also an opportunity, and before this Congress dissolves for good, we demand that they prioritize the food security and wellbeing of Americans.”
