New Nutrition Aid for Women & Children Reflects Bold Action Needed to Fight Hunger

November 21, 2022

Today, MAZON welcomed the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s announcement that it will expand and strengthen the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), saying the move underscores the Biden-Harris Administration’s recognition that only bold government action will effectively fight hunger.

“Strengthening the WIC benefit helps ensure that parents who are struggling to make ends meet do not also have to shoulder the burden of wondering if they can feed their children,” said Abby J. Leibman, President & CEO of MAZON. “We must never forget that these programs are a lifeline for real people — mothers and their children who are struggling simply to make ends meet. It will help them utilize WIC to eat healthier, supporting diverse needs with a greater range of culturally and religiously-appropriate food choices.

The Biden-Harris Administration clearly understands the impact of federal nutrition assistance programs on real people,” Leibman added. “The recent White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health made clear that charity alone cannot end hunger: we must strengthen our country’s safety net and advance bold strategic solutions that truly address hunger and allow it to persist in this country.”
