Farm Bill Conference Committee Must Follow Senate’s Lead

In June 2018, the U.S. House and Senate each advanced their version of the 2018 Farm Bill. The next step is for Congressional leadership to assign a bicameral Conference Committee, whose charge will be to hash out the disparities between the two drastically different versions of this bill and propose a compromise version that will then be voted on by each chamber.

We urge the Conference Committee to follow the bipartisan lead of the Senate and maintain eligibility and benefit levels for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Conferees must reject the ideological agenda put forth by the House, especially the polarizing proposals to expand harsh and indiscriminate work requirements, which will have deleterious effects on millions of American families in both urban and rural communities (click on the links below to dig into MAZON’s analysis).

We remind all Members of Congress that the 2018 Farm Bill must do no harm. We urge them to protect SNAP for the tens of millions of people who need this essential federal program to put food on the table each day. Together, that’s how they can ensure that our country’s entire food system—including those who grow our food and those who consume it—can thrive.

Historic Cuts to SNAP Deepen the War on Women (Ms. Magazine)

The last few months in Washington, D.C., have been consumed with political theatrics around the budget reconciliation process. Republicans in the House and Senate scrambled to pass legislation that will cut $184 billion from SNAP through 2034—by far the largest cut to SNAP in the program’s history—to finance tax cuts for the wealthy big businesses.
