Urge Congress to Restore Stolen SNAP Benefits

Every day, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) delivers nutrition benefits to over 41 million low-income Americans to help them feed their families with dignity and choice. SNAP recipients access their benefits via electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards, which have become a frequent target of “skimming” crimes. Skimmers take advantage of security weaknesses in EBT cards by using hidden devices to capture data during grocery checkout. The stolen data is then used to access and drain the benefits in the card holder’s account.

In December of 2022, Congress passed a law to protect and replace SNAP benefits that were stolen from families in need. Unfortunately, that law is set to expire on December 20, 2024. This important policy has led to the replacement of over $60 million in stolen benefits nationwide, and it must be continued.

Without urgent action, families whose SNAP benefits are stolen may lose their ability to put food on the table. Now is an important time to remind policymakers that they have an obligation to make program beneficiaries safe and whole. Please join MAZON in urging Congress to extend the benefit restoration policy.

Urge Your Elected Officials to Address the Food Distribution Crisis in Indian Country

This High Holy Day season, please join MAZON as we continue to echo calls from Tribal leaders, urging policymakers to address urgent and ongoing food shortages and delivery delays impacting the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP). Because of a government contracting failure, these two USDA programs have been plagued by problems for months that have left Indian Tribal Organizations (ITOs) and other service providers without necessary food items. We are proud to partner with Tribal organizations and leaders, and we hope you will join us in reminding policymakers that they have an obligation to respond to this emergency and work to advance long-term food security policies driven by Tribes and Indigenous communities.

Urge Congress to protect SNAP and lift up other MAZON priorities in the Farm Bill

The Farm Bill is one of the most transformational pieces of legislation that Congress regularly reauthorizes, and it is up for renewal. In addition to authorizing SNAP (food stamps) and other federal nutrition programs that serve tens of millions of Americans each year, the Farm Bill presents a unique opportunity to advance long-overdue policy solutions to the food security challenges of many special populations that MAZON prioritizes. Urge Congress: Pass the Expanded Child Tax Credit Now

Policymakers have reached a new bipartisan agreement to expand the Child Tax Credit, which would provide critical support to millions of families facing poverty and hunger. If passed, this would help 16 million children whose families are currently ineligible for this federal assistance. While we continue to push for stronger and longer-term policy solutions to address hunger, the Child Tax Credit is a proven and powerful tool to lift families out of poverty. Congress must pass the Wyden-Smith tax plan as an important step forward. Take action now.

Urge Congress to Fully Fund WIC — We Cannot Turn Away 2 Million Moms and Young Children

Congress has failed to provide sufficient funding for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). With rising food costs, more people need support, and our government must step up. If they don’t, insufficient funding for WIC will force states to turn away an estimated 2 million mothers and young children from receiving vital nutrition assistance, creating a waiting list for the first time in over 25 years. Take action now.

Urge Congress to Support College Students Facing Hunger

College students should be able to focus on their education free from worries about being able to regularly eat nutritious food, however an estimated 1 in 3 college students in the U.S. faces hunger. MAZON has been steadfast in our commitment to ending hunger among college students and supports legislation that addresses the federal barriers to SNAP facing college students. Take action now.
