State & Local Policies

MAZON’s state and local policy campaigns extend the importance of systemic change to our partners in the Jewish community and the anti-hunger field. We empower and organize these partners to effectively advance the interests and dignity of those who struggle to put food on the table.

School Meals in North Carolina

Thanks in no small part to the work of MAZON’s dedicated partners and the broader coalition, the North Carolina legislature passed a budget that takes important steps forward in giving more children access to no-cost meals during the school day. While we celebrate this progress, we remain deeply concerned about food insecurity among children in the state — and nationwide. Learn more here.

Healthy School Meals for All Colorado Children

MAZON organized and mobilized the Colorado Jewish community to secure free school meals for all. We worked as a member of the Healthy School Meals for All coalition to pass Proposition FF, the first-ever state ballot initiative securing free school meals for all public school students. MAZON worked closely with Los Angeles City Councilmember Bob Blumenfield on a resolution calling upon Congress and the Administration to make critical improvements to SNAP in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

MAZON’s coalition successfully passed bills to remove the mandatory school lunch co-payment for low-income Minnesota families, ensuring no child is ever turned away from a school meal.

Breakfast for Every Child in Texas

MAZON’s coalition supported a bill to require that schools where at least 80% of students qualify for free or reduced-price breakfast to offer a free and nutritious breakfast to every student.

Improving Access in Pennsylvania

MAZON’s coalition held a statewide forum with Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Public Welfare, providing a platform for participants to discuss food insecurity and how to improve access to critical anti-hunger programs like SNAP.
