Man Traveling Country On “Great Jewish Deli Schlep” Stops In Cambridge (WBZ News Radio)

Steve Goode is a man on a mission, and that mission involves eating a huge amount of Jewish deli food.

Goode is riding his motorcycle around the United States this summer on a 75-day, 16,000-mile quest to help end hunger with the organization Mazon. The Jewish motorcycle enthusiast will ride his fully-loaded Honda Gold Wing to 42 Jewish delis in total, driving for four to eight hours a day.

The cross-country “Great Jewish Deli Schlep” is well worth the trouble to him.

“There were 38 million people who were food insecure prior to COVID. They didn’t know where their next meal was going to come from. 38 million people. One-in-eight,” he said.

That estimated number has since doubled. Goode said his trip would help “amplify the conversation about hunger in America.”

The journey comes with its perks — Goode listed off some of his favorite Jewish deli orders:

“I’ll order matzah ball soup, I’ll order a corned beef, I’ll order a knish….” he said.

Goode was in Cambridge at Mamaleh’s Delicatessen on Sunday, where he ordered a turkey sandwich and coleslaw. He was diplomatic when asked what his favorite deli has been so far:

“I will say it this way…every deli has its own flavors…their own little piece of gold in the corner,” he said.

Historic Cuts to SNAP Deepen the War on Women (Ms. Magazine)

The last few months in Washington, D.C., have been consumed with political theatrics around the budget reconciliation process. Republicans in the House and Senate scrambled to pass legislation that will cut $184 billion from SNAP through 2034—by far the largest cut to SNAP in the program’s history—to finance tax cuts for the wealthy big businesses. They also hope to increase funding for pursuit of immigrants.  Read more.
