This week, the U.S. House of Representatives elected new committee leaders, including Congressman David Scott of Georgia, who will be the first Black chair of the Agriculture Committee.

In response to this news, Abby J. Leibman, President & CEO of MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger, issued the following statement:

“Congratulations to Representatives David Scott and Glenn Thompson for being elected as the next Chair and Ranking Member of the House Agriculture Committee. Chairman Scott’s historic election comes at a time of skyrocketing food insecurity in the wake of COVID-19, particularly for communities of color. As a longtime friend of MAZON, we know the Chairman shares our commitment to ensuring a robust safety net and addressing the systemic injustices that too often lead to hunger and hardship for millions of Americans.

MAZON also extends congratulations to Representative Rosa DeLauro, who will be the next Chair of the House Appropriations Committee. As she said in a recent conversation with MAZON, “No one should go to bed hungry in this land of abundance. The situation we’re in is a result of policy decisions, and we must work together to protect the social safety net.”

We look forward to working with these new and returning leaders in Congress, as well as the new Administration, to ensure that all Americans can feed themselves and their families.”
