MAZON Praises Stopgap Funding Bill, Urges Immediate Action to Protect Food Insecure Americans

October 2, 2023

On September 30th, MAZON welcomed action by Congress to prevent a government shutdown by passing a last-minute stopgap funding bill that will ensure the government continues to operate for the next 45 days and keeps intact critical support including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly food stamps) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).

“Congress did the right thing tonight by passing a stopgap funding bill and averting a government shutdown that would have been disastrous for the country, and particularly devastating for the 40 million Americans facing food insecurity,” said MAZON’s President and CEO, Abby J. Leibman. “But we must be clear: this was a manufactured crisis that brought our government dangerously close to creating more food insecurity and pushing millions of Americans deeper into hunger by slashing life-saving support including SNAP and WIC. Now, we must remain vigilant and fight to prevent this from happening all over again in November by urging Congress to establish a bipartisan spending plan that works for all Americans.”
